Episode 62 - Day 18 of 30 Days To More Sales - Which Products Actually Make You Money?
Sep 29, 2026
Which Products Actually Make You Money?
Your bestseller may be the product keeping everybody busiest, not the product making the business the most money.
That’s a hard sentence for a product owner to hear because we love a bestseller.
It gets the reviews.
It gets the ad money.
It gets the restock panic.
And it usually gets the best seat at the planning table.
Paul and I have had this exact conversation in our own business.
We had a product everybody knew was important. It sold well, showed up constantly in the packing area, and naturally got a lot of attention.
Then we started looking at what each product actually left behind after the costs tied to the sale.
And the answer wasn’t what we expected.
A quieter product was selling fewer units and bringing in less revenue, but each sale was putting more useful money back into the business.
That’s what we’re talking about in Day 18 of 30 Days to More Sales.
Because your bestseller, your highest-revenue product, and your strongest money-maker may be three different products.
IN THIS EPISODE, YOU’LL HEAR:
- Why your bestselling product doesn’t automatically deserve all the attention
- What Paul and I learned when we compared products based on what each sale actually left behind
- Why unit sales and revenue only tell part of the story
- How a quieter product can sometimes contribute more money than the obvious bestseller
- Why the same product should be compared using the same time period and sales channel
- How Amazon, Shopify, Walmart.com, TikTok Shop, Etsy, and wholesale costs can change the answer
- Why a busy product with weak numbers may need fixing before it needs more promotion
- How to decide which product has actually earned more attention
YOUR ONE CLEAR NEXT STEP
Choose three products.
Use the same sales channel and the same complete month or quarter for all three.
Then compare more than just how many units they sold.
Look at what each sale leaves behind and what that adds up to across all the units sold.
You may discover that the product getting the most attention deserves it.
Or you may find a quieter product that has been sitting there waiting for a fair shot.
The goal isn’t to automatically stop selling anything.
The goal is to make your next product decision based on more than the loudest sales number.
