Episode 61 - Day 17 of 30 Days To More Sales - How to Price Products for Profit — Not Just Revenue
Sep 28, 2026
How to Price Products for Profit — Not Just Revenue You can sell out and still lose money.
A sold-out product can be a financial emergency wearing a very cute label.
That sounds dramatic, but I’ve seen how easily it happens.
The product sells.
Customers like it.
Reviews are good.
Everybody is busy packing orders.
And from the outside, it looks like a huge success.
But if the price only covers the cost of making or buying the product and forgets about everything else that happens after the sale, more orders don’t necessarily fix the problem.
They can actually make the leak bigger.
That’s what we’re talking about in Day 17 of 30 Days to More Sales.
Because the question isn’t only:
Will customers pay this price?
We also have to ask:
Can the business afford to sell it at this price?
IN THIS EPISODE, YOU’LL HEAR:
- Why selling out doesn’t automatically mean a product is profitable
- How a popular product can keep everyone busy while leaving too little money behind
- Why product or manufacturing cost is only the beginning of the pricing conversation
- The additional costs product-business owners often forget to include
- Why the same product can perform very differently depending on where you sell it
- How Amazon, Shopify, Walmart.com, TikTok Shop, Etsy, and wholesale can create different costs
- Why discounts, returns, shipping, advertising, and fees can completely change the picture
- What to do when you don’t know one of your numbers yet
YOUR ONE CLEAR NEXT STEP
Choose one proven product and one sales channel.
Don’t try to analyze your entire catalog today.
Take the regular selling price and look at everything that follows that sale.
What does it cost to make or buy the product?
What does it cost to get it to you?
What happens when you package it, fulfill it, ship it, advertise it, sell it through a platform, discount it, or deal with returns?
Then ask:
What does one sale actually leave behind?
And if you’re missing a number, don’t pretend the cost is zero.
Mark it missing and find it.
A missing number is better than an invisible one.
