Episode 56 - Day 12 of 30 Days To More Sales - Build a Customer Clarity Map by Following One Real Order

Sep 23, 2026

We could describe the kind of person we thought our customer was.

We knew about how old she was. We had a pretty good idea whether she was buying for herself or her family.

And we still couldn’t answer the question that would actually help us sell more:

Why did she buy that product on that day?

Her age didn’t tell us what sent her looking.

It didn’t tell us what caught her attention, which product she chose first, what helped her feel comfortable buying, or what she might need from us next.

That’s what we’re talking about in Day 12 of 30 Days to More Sales.

Because a customer profile can tell you who someone is on paper.

But a real order can show you what she actually did.

And sometimes that tells you a whole lot more.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU’LL HEAR:

  • Why knowing your customer’s age and demographics isn’t the same as understanding why she buys
  • What we learned when we stopped describing the customer and started following an actual order
  • Why two very similar customers can buy the same product for completely different reasons
  • What a real order can tell you about the path your customer took
  • Why I’d rather write “I don’t know yet” than invent an answer we can’t prove
  • How the buying path looks different on Amazon, Shopify, TikTok Shop, Walmart.com, and Etsy
  • Why one unusual order shouldn’t make you change your entire business
  • How repeated customer behavior can help you make better marketing decisions

YOUR ONE CLEAR NEXT STEP

Choose one recent order for an important product.

Then follow the story of that order as far as the information allows you to.

Where did the customer come from?

What did she choose?

What do you actually know about what helped her buy?

And what would be the most useful thing for your business to do next?

You don’t need to know every answer.

In fact, one of the most important things I talk about in this episode is being willing to say:

I don’t know yet.

Because a real blank is more useful than a made-up answer.

The Customer Clarity Map helps you pull that information together for one customer and one product so you can make your marketing clearer instead of trying to speak to everyone.
